Cat With Guns - Concept


Concept statement: 
In Cat with Guns, the player fights off waves of enemies, improving their survivability with weapons, traps and power-ups as their kill count increases. 

Genre/Category: Top-down Shooter
It's in the top-down view and you shoot enemies. 

Concept creation process: 
The initial idea sparked from playing a mini-game within the 2010 fps Call of Duty: Black ops (Developed by Treyarch).  This mini game is called Dead ops: Arcade, an arcade top-down shooter version of the Zombies mode found within the game. I found that in Dead ops: Arcade the player had no where near as much content compared to even the more basic maps that could be played in the zombies mode, no doors to buy, no perks, no extra guns. So my concept came from what if you could expand the map by buying doors to new areas? What if you could buy perks (which work like power-ups btw) to make the player stronger? 
I came up with the idea of the player being a cat from my own cat. There's always been that joke of "cats are evil and will take over the world" and my cat is constantly meowing for extra food. So I took those two elements to form a story concept of a cat that attempts to wipe out humanity because he's hungry and wants more food. 

Audience and competitive analysis:
The target audience would be towards fans of top-down games. The game would share similarity to its initial inspiration, Dead Ops Arcade, but along side this,  games like Enter the Gungeon (developed by Dodge Roll) have elements similar. The mentioned games are room based top-down shooters but what would make Cat with Guns different is the player isn't locked into anyone room until it's cleared out.  The player would be able to bring enemies from one are to another regardless of where they spawned. 

Game treatment and concept art: 
You play as a cat. The cat has a gun, many guns in fact. You're annoyed you haven't been fed yet. "Filthy humans" you think. This is the first and last straw. You are a cat, a being above a peasant like a human. Time to make them feel your wrath. 

Your goal is to survive waves of enemies trying to kill you. To aid you in your survival:
- Areas to open up and expand you terrain 
- Weapons and power-ups to purchase, making you stronger
- Traps to take out hordes of enemies 
- Waves of enemies that get stronger and bigger in numbers as waves increase 

The naming, while not very creative, tells a potential player exactly what the game is about, a cat that has guns. From there the potential player could guess that the game may be a shooter as it involves guns. A lot of the concept art was done on a work book during a lecture to one of my units of study. I took the doodles I had and attempted to recreate them in Adobe Illustrator to make the first set of sprites. Art could change throughout development.
